Our Fourth Trimester parenting support programme is a 6 week cycle/term for parents and their partners or significant caregivers. It is suitable for those with bumps or babies up to four (ish) months of age. (This early period of nurturing in the first few months of a baby’s life is often known the “fourth trimester“).  It is run by Dr Rosie Knowles (Carrying Matters) and the team from the Sheffield Sling Surgery and Library, and Lindsay Snow (Understanding Kids), to help parents with bumps or small babies (under 4 months) find out all they need to know about this precious and key stage in their lives.

4th Trimester Sheffield Sling Surgert is a popular Monday morning group for expectant parents or with newborns

The 4th Trimester sessions run over six weeks and are free to attend.

(We welcome a suggested £2-5 donation towards volunteer costs.)

The first session is all about relaxing into parenthood and connecting with your baby, and how slings can help to build secure and loving relationships and support good mental health. In subsequent weeks, Lindsay will support parents with topics covering crying, sleeping, how baby and parent brains work, relationships and more. The last session covers looking after your own wellbeing and mental health as a parent.

Lizzie Rolls (a certified IBCLC) or Jane Tarbuck (a GP with breastfeeding training) provide the “feeding” topic of the 4T cycle, and there is a regular guest slot about caring for the post natal body from Libby at S1 Chiropractic (who is very experienced with women’s health).

We will encourage attendees from each cycle to develop “village” style friendship groups and encouragement, we’ll collect your email address as you book to be able to facilitate this, and we will signpost to further parenting and sling support via social media groups and useful resources.

Can I bring my toddler? 4T is focused on the needs of new parents and very young babies and the sessions can be busy. We are not able to provide entertainment for older children who may become excited and would strongly encourage you to find alternative childcare for the 4T group. We do have many other sling library drop in sessions that are very child friendly and you are most welcome there.

4th Trimester Session structure

10.30am-10.45 Welcome, with tea/coffee
10.45-11.30am Topic and Discussion
11.30 am Sling or Other Support “Bite”
11.45am- 12.30pm Individual support and sling library drop in session

Split into two parts, the first section is for non-judgemental evidence-based parenting support and the chance to meet other new parents.

From 11.30am onwards, the focus shifts more to sling support with your own carrier, or the chance to try ours! We have weighted demo dolls and we can also help you practice with your own baby. The free stretchy wrap/Caboo hire scheme can be accessed here, and slings can be hired to take home/purchased from Sling Spot (next door to the Snug) on the day.

The sling library session is a drop in, you are welcome to attend this with your young baby if you want to come later on.
